Family awarded almost $7 million in lawsuit against Nashville hospital
Jehl Law Group, PLLC (attorneys Carey Acerra, Deena Arnold and April Huntoon) represented the children of Nicole Elkins, a single mother in her early 40s from Kentucky. After a motor vehicle accident rendered her a quadriplegic in August 2015, Ms. Elkins was admitted to Select Specialty Hospital for “specialized wound care” in November of 2015.
In addition to a complicated medical history, she had three pressure wounds at the time she was admitted. Despite Defendants’ promises for “specialized wound care,” when she left their hospital in January of 2017, she had developed a total of 14 wounds. Upon admission at a subsequent hospital, Ms. Elkins was found to be septic from infected wounds and unfortunately passed away in early March of 2017.
This case was tried January 29 through February 14, 2024, in Nashville, Tennessee against Select Specialty Hospital-Nashville and its parent company, Select Medical Corporation. After deliberations, the jury returned a verdict for $1,271,273.09 in compensatory damages and $5,704,587.06 in punitive damages.
Family awarded more than $30 million after mother’s death at Memphis nursing home
Martha Jane Pierce moved into Allenbrooke Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center after her dementia worsened. According to the family’s attorney, Cameron Jehl, for a woman in her 80s, even with progressing dementia, she was doing okay. Unfortunately, Mrs. Pierce died at Allenbrooke in 2009 when was 82-years-old.
While she was in the nursing home, she suffered from malnutrition, dehydration and more. Her family contacted Jehl Law Group and sued the nursing home, its parent company and several other executives a year later.
